Bio-nano Science: Better Metrics Would Accelerate Progress

An early step of evaluating a nanomaterial’s potential for biological applications is investigating its interactions with cells and fluids. These experiments generate complex data, which are summarized analyzed through the use metrics. Choosing appropriate metrics thus critical to build foundation nanomaterial research. Unfortunately, several widely used in bio-nano scientific literature have significant issues may not be delivering their intended insight. This perspective will label discuss three problematic wide within field: Percentage Cell Association, measure interaction strength between cell nanoengineered material; Internalization Factor, ability internalize system; Detected Protein Abundance, analyze composition proteins that adsorb surface. We review origin each metric explain why fails deliver insight domain experiments. Finally, metric, we present alternative necessary while imposing little (or no) additional experimental burden. hope this increase better metrics, improve reporting, ultimately aid transition science more quantitative field.
